Location | On the Strip North of Treasure Island next door to the fashion mall and facing the now empty Desert Inn lot.
Theme | This is the only casino on the Strip that is not a casino! Instead it's a Wild West gaming hall including a very good Margarita bar. They play country music here and the dealers wear denim, the theme is more evident by the clientele all wearing cowboy hats and boots with smoking cheroots hanging out of mouths. This is particularly evident the first week of December when the National rodeo finals come to town. This place has real history, it is the original site of “Pair of Dice” the first gambling joint on the Strip, later to be owned by a crooked LA policeman thrown off the force for turning a blind eye to gaming on Sunset Strip LA. The place was knocked down and the Last Frontier was born along with a small theme park. Again the Frontier was reinvented as sort of space aged "New Frontier". Elvis played a disastrous tour here in 1965 and it was sold to Howard Hughes in 1967, only after Hughes got control of it did it completely lose its mob connections.
Attractions | This casino or gaming hall, as the Frontier prefer to be known, is low on attractions but there is a video arcade and a couple of tennis courts.
Shopping | With the fashion show mall right next door it can't really expect to compete so it doesn't bother, there is a gift shop and florist and that is about it.
Dining |
We did not eat a thing here however they do have a Western themed buffet including all sorts of BBQ dishes that looked pretty good (B $9.95 L$9.95 D $12.95 Sunday Brunch $13.95 with Champagne) and a seafood buffet on Friday nights at $17.95. There is also Cantina (Mexican) and the St Thomas Grotto (Seafood) and to be honest that is about it. We did not see a coffee shop but we were not there very long. |
|
Gaming | 41,235 sq ft of gaming space housing over a thousand slot and video machines and about 40 tables. Table minimums started at about $3 when we were there in the day and the range of nickel machines was not bad. This is an older style casino and was very quiet when we visited, this actually made it feel a little eerie but not unpleasant.
Drinks Service | We were served very quickly but I have heard that if you don't tip they don't return and despite my many miserly traits I always tip cocktail waitresses.
Best Thing | Good old Vegas feel and it's great to be able to park on the Strip.
Worst Thing | Too quiet | |
Overall | A quieter casino with a good colourful history. See it now because it is rumoured to be next in line for implosion and will be replaced by a casino based on the San Francisco Bay.
